Leather and suede cleaning in Greenville: what to expect

6 min readUpdated October 28, 2026
The short answer
In short

Leather and suede in Greenville do not go through ordinary dry cleaning. FabriCare sends them to specialists for cleaning, reconditioning, and recoloring, and the turnaround is two to three weeks. You can drop a piece at Thornblade in Greer, Augusta Road, or Woodruff Road.

Why leather and suede cannot take a regular dry-cleaning cycle

Leather is a skin, not a textile. The solvents that clean it also remove the oils and fat liquors that make it flexible. A jacket that is cleaned and then sent home without replacing those oils comes back stiff, papery, and prone to cracking at the elbows. Competent leather cleaning is two jobs: clean, then put back what the cleaning took out. FabriCare re-oils and reconditions every piece after cleaning. That is the difference between a leather service and running a jacket through the ordinary dry-cleaning cycle used for a wool suit.

Suede loses surface dye in cleaning, especially at cuffs, collars, and seat seams. Recoloring is part of the process. The leather and suede page lists jackets, coats, blazers, shearling, skirts, trousers, handbags, gloves, belts, and garments with leather trim. A specialist may handle the piece on the company's behalf, which is why it leaves the ordinary two-to-three-day line.

Why the turnaround is two to three weeks

Plan on two to three weeks. The work includes cleaning, reconditioning, and recoloring, and it is handled by specialists. That is longer than the two to three business days of standard dry cleaning for a reason: skipping the reconditioning step is how a jacket comes back ready to crack. Same-day service, in by 10:00 AM and ready by 5:00 PM for an $8.95 fee, is for standard dry cleaning and laundered shirts. Leather, suede, and heavily stained pieces cannot be rushed.

Bring seasonal outerwear in before you need it. If only one piece of a set is soiled, still bring the other. Cleaning shifts color slightly, and pieces cleaned together stay matched.

Leather is a skin. Cleaning strips the oils that keep it flexible, so reconditioning follows.

What to point out at drop-off

The counter needs the same facts it needs for any stained garment, plus the facts that are specific to a skin. Tell them what happened and roughly when. Knowing whether a mark is oil, protein, tannin, or dye, and whether it is a week old or a year old, changes which agent a spotter reaches for. Never iron over a stain, and never put a stained piece through a home dryer before drop-off. Heat sets marks that might otherwise lift.

Point out the wear. Cuffs, collars, and seat seams are where leather and suede lose surface dye. If a sleeve is already stiff, say so. If the piece is part of a matching jacket and skirt, or a two-piece suede outfit, bring both even when only one looks dirty. If the trim is leather on an otherwise textile garment, say that too. Garments with leather trim are on the accepted list, and the trim is the fragile part.

The general inspection is free. If the counter sees a risk before work starts, you are told and you decide. Quotes are given before cleaning, not after. There is no published leather rate card on this site. Call the store, describe the piece, and get the number before you commit.

Where you can drop it off

Leather and suede service is available at all three stores, so the drop-off can be any counter. Thornblade is at 405 The Parkway #600, Greer, SC 29650, phone 864.877.7701, with a drive-thru and weekday hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Augusta Road is at 3008 Augusta St, Greenville, SC 29605, phone 864.558.0311, a walk-in counter open until 6:00 PM on weekdays. Woodruff Road is at 185 Woodruff Rd, Greenville, SC 29607, phone 864.234.0036, with a drive-thru and weekday hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. All three are open Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and closed Sunday.

The drive-thru only makes the handoff easier. Leather is still a two-to-three-week order. Thornblade serves Greer and Pelham Road. Augusta Road is the closest counter to downtown. Woodruff Road sits just east of I-385.

Bring leather and suede to the counter. The free twice-weekly route is for ordinary garments: bag out by 9:00 AM, no fee and no contract, through Greenville, Greer, Simpsonville, Mauldin, Five Forks, and Taylors.

What comes back, and what does not

What you should expect back is a piece that has been cleaned, re-oiled, and recolored where the surface dye lifted. An even finish after recoloring is the intended result. A stiff jacket is the result of skipping that second step, which is why the service includes it. Matching pieces cleaned in the same visit should still look like a set.

Do not expect a same-day return. Old, heat-set stains may be permanent, and treatment stops where it would risk the material. A textile coat with no leather trim belongs on the ordinary dry cleaning timeline instead.

Questions

Questions this article answers

Can leather or suede go through regular dry cleaning?

No. Leather is a skin. The solvents that clean it remove the oils that keep it flexible, so every piece is re-oiled and reconditioned afterward. Suede also loses surface dye at wear points, and recoloring is part of the process. That is a specialist job, not the ordinary dry-cleaning cycle.

How long does leather and suede cleaning take in Greenville?

Two to three weeks. The work is cleaning, reconditioning, and recoloring, handled by specialists. Ordinary dry cleaning is two to three business days. Leather and suede cannot be ready the same day.

What should I tell the counter when I drop off leather?

Say what the mark is and about how old it is. Point out stiff areas and wear at the cuffs, collar, or seat. Bring a matching jacket and skirt, or both pieces of a suede set, even if only one is soiled. Do not iron the piece or dry it at home first.

Which FabriCare store takes leather and suede?

Any of the three. Thornblade at 405 The Parkway #600 in Greer, Augusta Road at 3008 Augusta St in Greenville, and Woodruff Road at 185 Woodruff Rd in Greenville all offer the service. Thornblade and Woodruff Road have drive-thru lanes. Augusta Road is a walk-in counter.
