A family business that still presses by hand

Three stores, one plant of our own, pressers we trained ourselves, and clothes that never leave the Upstate. That is the whole model, and it is why our customers stay for decades.

About FabriCare of Greenville

FabriCare of Greenville is a family-owned and operated dry cleaning and laundry company with three stores in Greenville County, South Carolina — The Parkway at Thornblade in Greer, Augusta Road in Greenville, and Woodruff Road in Greenville — all served by our own cleaning plant. Our cleaners and pressers are trained in-house and all work is done here rather than shipped to a regional processing facility, which is why a question about an order can be answered by someone who walks to the rack and looks at it.

There is a version of this business that scales faster. You take in garments at a storefront, truck them to a central plant two states away, and run everything through one process at one temperature. It is cheaper per piece and it is how a great deal of dry cleaning in America now works.

We do not do that, and the reason is not sentimental. A wool suit, a beaded silk gown, a linen blazer and a down comforter need four genuinely different treatments, and the only way to give them four different treatments is to have a person look at each one and decide. Centralized processing cannot afford that decision. Our own plant can.

Why we run our own plant instead of shipping out

So we keep the cleaning in our own hands, and we keep three counters across Greenville and Greer — each with its own phone number and its own staff, with drive-thru lanes at Thornblade and Woodruff Road. The trade-off is that we will never be the cheapest cleaner in the Upstate. The upside is that your jacket comes back with its shoulder shaped rather than flattened, and when something needs fixing you talk to the person who can fix it.

How we work

Four things we will always do

01

We inspect before we clean, not after

Every garment is checked against its care label and its construction before it goes near a machine. Stains, loose buttons and weak seams get noted on the ticket, and that inspection determines the solvent, the temperature and the finishing method.

02

Stains are treated by hand at the spotting board

Most stains are removed before the cleaning cycle, not by it. Our spotters work by category — protein, tannin, oil, dye — because the agent that lifts red wine will drive an oil stain deeper into the fiber.

03

We press to the garment's construction

Cleaning gets a garment clean; pressing is what makes it look new. Our pressers shape the shoulder, the lapel roll and the sleeve head rather than flattening them, and creases get set where the tailoring says they belong.

04

If we get it wrong, we fix it

Call the store, not a call center. Someone who can walk to the rack and physically look at your garment will answer, and if the work is not right we re-do it. That is the entire advantage of being small and local.

Our people

Trained in-house, kept for years

Spotting and pressing are genuinely skilled trades and there is no shortcut to learning them. Our spotters train on the board for months before they touch a customer garment, and our pressers learn the difference between a jacket that has been pressed and one that has merely been flattened.

That is why our staff turnover is low and why the person finishing your shirts this month is probably the same person who finished them last year. Consistency in garment care is not a process document — it is the same trained hands doing the same work.

Ownership

Owned and operated by Keith Schemm

FabriCare of Greenville is owned and operated by Keith Schemm. He is at one of the three stores most days, and the number on this page reaches the store rather than a call center — which is the reason a question about your order gets answered by somebody who can walk to the rack and look at it.
