With temperatures heating up it’s time to pack away some of your winter clothes and say hello to all of springs fashion. Firstly lets talk about how to properly pack away and store winter clothes. Below are some tips to make it an easier transition.
It is important to wash clothes made of polyester, cotton and linen before you store them. This will help to make sure no stains are setting in and there won’t be any discoloration or have odors. Dry cleaning helps prolong the garments life and saves you time in the laundry room. Consider washing your winter shoes and boots as well.
While cardboard boxes can be easier to get, the glue used on the boxes can attract bugs. Cardboard is also more susceptible to water damage. Plastic storage containers are safer for your clothes to stay in pristine condition. Adding natural products like lavender, lemon zest, or cedar can help your clothes smell fresh for next winter. Mothballs is not recommended anymore since they fumes are hazardous.
Store in Cool Areas
Where you store your clothes is just as important. Don’t store clothes in your garage or basement. Areas that face extreme temperature changes can cause fiber damage. Place your storage container or garment bag in a cool, dark and ventilated area.
When it comes to natural fiber fabrics, ie. wood and cashmere, folding is recommended. You may stretch the clothing out of shape when hanging. Place acid-free tissue between each piece of clothing to help avoid wrinkling. Use padded hangers for coats and clothing made from cotton or silk.
